Summary
This easy puzzle box can be opened by twisting the container into a heart and then splitting it into two separate hearts.
Customization
- The design is available in both regular and mini sizes. The mini size requires less hardware.
- The regular size frame contains extra magnet holes to support multiple configurations. You do not need to add magnets to every hole.
- The box can be assembled to unlock either in the heart configuration or in the rectangular configuration.
- If you want the box to start out as a locked heart and separate in the rectangular configuration, print "Alternate_Key.stl".
- Rather than printing one right lid and one left lid, you may choose instead to print two lids from the same side, which will alter whether the boxes open from the front and back. If you do this, make sure you also print the correct bottom parts to match.
Printing
Hardware for regular size
Required
- Three M3 bolts that are 8-12mm long.
Recommended
- Eight 3x3mm cylinder magnets to align the lid.
- Four 6x3mm cylinder magnets to pull the frames together.
- Additional holes in the side of the frame are available to support 3x3mm cylinder magnets.
Hardware for mini size
Required
- Three M3 bolts that are 8-10mm long.
Assembly
Regular Size
- Attach the key to the left frame and secure with an M3 bolt. Glue is optional.
- Glue magnets as desired. Make sure magnets are oriented to align the lids and pull the frame together both in the heart and rectangle configuration.
- Use M3 bolts to attach both lids to their frames. Do not over-tighten, or the lids will break or be too tight to rotate.
- Glue on bottoms to each frame.
Mini Size
- Attach the key to the left frame and secure with an M3 bolt that's 8-10mm long. Depending on your print, you may want to keep the key a little loose so there is flex for the two halves of the heart to snap together.
- Slide lids into each frame.
- Connect the two sides frames in the shape of a heart.
- Twist the frame parts to lock them into a rectangular shape.
